Jerry says NO to:
✘ Loud, chaotic environments
✘ Being smothered with cuddles or hugs
✘ Cats (untested, but best in a no-cat home)
✘ Young children under 5
✘ Being left completely alone for long stretches without a doggy friendJerry is a four-year-old gentle giant who’s still finding his feet in pet life, and he’s doing a beautiful job of it. At first glance, he looks like the kind of dog who’d make you feel safe walking down the street – tall, strong, and striking – but underneath that big presence is a sensitive boy with a soft heart.
Jerry loves people, but he likes things on his terms. Ear scratches and pats make him happy, though he prefers not to be smothered with cuddles. He’ll happily follow you around the house and flop down in whatever room you’re in, content just to be close by. He has a funny “guard dog” streak too – if someone comes to the door, he’ll be the first to let you know, not because he’s tough, but because he’s a little unsure of new things.
He’s learning more every day about the joys of pet life. Toys are new and exciting – he’ll happily chew the fluff out of a soft toy or chase a frisbee if you throw one. Food puzzles and Kongs are his absolute favourite; he’s clever, food-motivated, and loves the challenge. His foster mum says he’s brilliant at working them out and it keeps him happily entertained.
Routine is important for Jerry. He enjoys his breakfast and dinner, politely waiting until he’s told he can eat, and will never say no to a pig ear as a special treat. He’s a pro sleeper too – his favourite spot is his dog bed in the lounge room, but he was just as settled in the laundry when he first arrived. During the day, he’s content snoozing with his foster sister on the patio while his people are out, though he does best with another confident dog around to reassure him when the world feels overwhelming.
Walks are something Jerry enjoys in moderation. A short daily stroll around the block is perfect for him, though he has managed longer walks when asked (with some gentle persuasion). Loud noises and sudden movements can still spook him, but he’s gaining confidence each week and takes comfort when another dog shows him the ropes. He’s beautifully polite on lead, knows his name, basic recall, “wait” for meals and crossing streets, and “leave it.” He’s working on going to his bed on command and learning “lay,” and with his love of food he’ll pick up new tricks quickly.
Jerry has perfect house manners – he’s never had an accident inside, will toilet before bed and sleep through the night, and while he doesn’t love grooming, he stands quietly and lets you get it done. He hasn’t been tested with cats or small children, so a calmer, adult-friendly home would be the best fit for him right now.
At his core, Jerry is a sweet, sensitive boy who just needs a calm household, gentle guidance, and a family that will respect his space while encouraging his growing confidence. With his striking looks, loyal nature, and goofy toy-chewing charm, he’ll make a wonderful companion for someone who’s ready to help him shine.
